Writing Copy- Codes and Conventions

  • These are the elements that define a media text and make it what it is, and to show you how it is different from any other  media text.
  • Newspapers share the same sort of content as other media format  such as television and radio- they have stories about events that interest people. This is news in a particular way.

Codes and conventions of popular newspapers:
  • Are based on the way the news is presented to the reader.
  • Newspapers have a masthead with their title
  • The copy is as up to date as possible- yesterday's news is not news.
  • Articles are written in columns
  • Newspapers use headlines
Simple sentence:
A simple sentence, also called and independent clause, contains a subject and a verb.

Compound sentence:
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator.

Complex sentence: A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which.

  • In a straight news story, it's best to get  the most important information in your story up to the top.
  • As the first paragraph in an article, the introduction is very important. Its contents tell the reader in more detail what the article is about.
  • The mail on Sunday:
Front page news story- Anarchists fly migrant in on Ryan air.
  • Used quotes for effect and make it bolder/ easier to read.
  • The bigger text outlines the article and it gets straight into the story.
